Indian Army Latest Updates: October 2026

October 2026 was a big month for the Indian Army: a new doctrine for future wars, a fresh indigenous loitering munition, a push to cut imports, and two major joint exercises with friendly nations. Here is a quick, exam-ready summary for NDA, CDS, AFCAT and SSB aspirants.

1. Land Warfare Doctrine 2026 Released

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the updated Land Warfare Doctrine 2026 at the Army Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi on 23 October 2026. The doctrine lays down how the Army will transform into a technology-enabled, adaptable force.

  • Integration of drones, artificial intelligence, precision weapons and multi-domain operations into ground warfare.
  • Greater jointness among the Army, Navy and Air Force.
  • Manned-unmanned teaming and preparing soldiers for technologically contested battlefields.
  • Aligned with Defence Forces Vision 2047; land power remains central even as space and cyber domains grow.

The Defence Minister asked commanders to build a long-term vision for the next two to three decades while staying ready for immediate threats, and to speed up work on AI, autonomous systems, data analytics and cybersecurity.

2. First Batch of Nagastra-2 Loitering Munitions

The Army has received the first batch of Nagastra-2, an indigenous anti-tank loitering munition (often called a “kamikaze drone”) made by Nagpur-based Solar Defence & Aerospace Ltd. Trials were completed at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in August 2026.

  • Warhead: 4 kg tandem shaped-charge, reported to penetrate about 650 mm of armour (RHA).
  • Range: up to 25 km in recover-and-reuse mode; up to 50 km in fire-and-forget mode.
  • Endurance: up to 60 minutes, with day and night cameras.
  • Built to resist jamming and GPS spoofing.

3. Push to Reduce Foreign Imports

On 20 October 2026, the Army invited consultancy firms to study its Directorate of Indigenisation (set up in 2010 under DGEME) and propose a long-term roadmap to cut dependence on imported equipment and spares. This supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Positive Indigenisation Lists, the SRIJAN portal and iDEX. As per the Ministry of Defence, India’s defence production reached about ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY 2025-26.

4. Bharat Rice for Troops

On 12 October 2026, the Army launched Bharat Rice for troops in New Delhi in the presence of Rajnath Singh and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. The Army signed an MoU with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) so rice reaches Army Supply Depots directly, including in Ladakh and the Northeast.
