How to join Indian Army after graduation?

After graduation, a person aspiring to be officer in the Indian Armed Forces gets ample of opportunities to appear for the selection interview. The entries to join the Indian Army are both direct and via written exam.

These entries varies as per the qualifications required. The various entries to join the Indian Army as an officer after graduation are:

  • Through CDS written exam
  • Through SSC Tech and TGC entry
  • Through NCC entry
  • Through JAG entry

Entry through CDS Exam

This is one of the most frequent ways opted by aspirants to join the army as it gives opportunity to graduates from all domains. The CDS or Combined Defence Services Exam is conducted by UPSC, twice a year.

IMA, Dehradun

For male candidates aspiring to join the Indian Military Academy there are 3 papers of English, GK and Mathematics. For male and female candidates aspiring to join the Officers Training Academy there are 2 papers of English and GK.

Eligibility:

  • Graduation from a UGC recognized university.
  • Age between 19-24 years
  • Unmarried (for IMA)

The Technical Entries

For a candidate having graduation in B.Tech or B.E. there are two ways to join the Indian Army.

1. Technical Graduate Course or TGC

This entry is for B. Tech graduates from various branches and comes twice a year. An aspirant has not to appear for written exam and can avail for the interview directly. After selection, the candidate undergoes training at IMA, Dehradun.

Eligibility:

  • Unmarried male candidate of age between 20-27 years
  • B.Tech from a recognized university
  • Different branches have different set of cut-off and no. of vacancies.

2. Short Service Commission (Tech) entry or SSC-Tech

OTA, Chennai

This entry is for both male and female candidates having B.E. or B.Tech degree from a recognized university. The aspirant after selection undergoes training at OTA, Chennai.

Eligibility:

  • Unmarried male candidate of age between 20-27 years and unmarried female candidates of age 19-25 years
  • B.Tech or B.E. degree from a recognized university
  • Different branches have different set of cut-off and no. of vacancies.

NCC Special Entry Scheme

This is another direct entry to join the army for college graduates who have completed their NCC training. After selection, the candidate undergoes training at OTA, Chennai.

Eligibility:

  • Graduate from a recognized university with a minimum of 50%
  • 2 years of service in NCC senior division army
  • Minimum of ‘B’ Grade in ‘C’ Certificate Exam of NCC
  • Male and female candidates of age 19-25 years

Judge Advocate General Branch entry scheme or JAG entry

This entry provides an amazing opportunity to the law graduates who aspire to join the Indian Army. The training of the selected individuals takes place at OTA, Chennai.

Eligibility:

  • Law graduate with minimum of 55% marks and registered with Bar Council of Indian or State
  • Male or female individual of age 21-27 years
