Indian Air Force Latest Updates: October 2026
The Indian Air Force (IAF) turned 94 in October 2026, and the month was packed: a grand air show over the Ganga, a big multinational exercise, a drone roadmap for industry and important statements on future fighters. Here is your exam-ready summary.
1. IAF Day 2026: 94 Years of the Indian Air Force
- Date: 8 October 2026 (the IAF was established on 8 October 1932).
- Theme: “Indian Air Force: Infallible, Impervious and Precise”.
- Chief of the Air Staff: Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh.
2. “Wings over Ganges” Air Show, Varanasi
To mark the 94th anniversary, the IAF held a three-day aerial display, “Wings over Ganges”, at Namo Ghat, Varanasi. The finale on 25 October 2026 was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel.
- Nearly 100 aircraft from 12 air bases, including Rafale, Su-30 MKI, LCA Tejas and the LCH Prachand.
- Displays by the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team and the Sarang Helicopter Display Team.
- PM Modi called the show “Magnificent!”
3. Exercise Tarang Shakti 2026
The second edition of the IAF-hosted multinational air exercise Tarang Shakti was held at Air Force Station Jodhpur from 26 September to 12 October 2026, with the theme “Power in Partnership”.
- Participants: Australia, Bangladesh, France, Germany, Sri Lanka, UAE and the USA.
- Observers from 32 nations attended. The first edition was held in 2024.
4. Future Fighters: What the Air Chief Said
Speaking ahead of IAF Day, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh said:
- The IAF remains committed to the indigenous fifth-generation AMCA stealth fighter, but may look at other platforms if it faces major delays. No decision has been taken on Russia’s Su-57 offer.
- The IAF needs about 36–40 modern fighters every year to close capability gaps.
- The 114-jet Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) deal could be concluded this financial year if talks go smoothly.
- Deliveries of the Tejas Mk-1A (83 jets ordered in 2021) have faced engine and integration delays; Tejas Mk-2 is expected to fill gaps later.
- No separate drone force: drones and loitering munitions will be integrated into existing combat wings.
5. Drone Roadmap Shared with Industry
On 21 October 2026, the IAF held an Industry Outreach Programme at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, to share its long-term needs in unmanned and autonomous systems. It built on the Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Roadmap released at IAF Dronathon 2026, Pokhran (14 September). Priority areas include indigenous propulsion, autonomy software and resilient navigation.
